OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF ICFO SCHOOLS ON THE FRONTIERS OF LIGHT AND COVID-19 SITUATION

The organizing team of ICFO SCHOOLS ON THE FRONTIERS OF LIGHT is studying the evolving coronavirus situation and how it may affect our meeting.

The organizers would like to inform you that at this time, we do not have plans to postpone or cancel the event. That being said, the health and safety of all of our attendees is our priority and we will take into account all recommendations from the national authorities. We reserve the right to restrict the attendance of attendees who reside in effected areas to ensure a healthy and productive symposium for all.

We will keep you updated on the situation via email or through this website.

You can also find updated information on the website of the Ministry of Health.

If you have any doubt or question, you can contact us at events@icfo.eu

The organizers of ICFO SCHOOLS ON THE FRONTIERS OF LIGHT “Emergent phenomena in Moiré materials”

Moiré systems with 2D materials offer a novel platform for exploring a plethora of exotic phenomena. The emerging field of twistronics embodies a fundamentally new approach to engineering the electronic and optical properties of materials and devices. A tantalising example is the so-called magic angle rotation between sheets of graphene or semi-conducting 2D materials, which has shown superconducting phases similar to those of unconventional high-Tc materials. The wide tunability of Moiré systems offers many exciting new possibilities to explore.
This 2-day symposium (9-10 July) gathers leading experimentalists and theorists, and will cover the optics and electronics of twisted 2D materials: Twistronics, Correlated electron systems, Excitonics, Mott insulators, Polaritonics, Superconductivity, Magnetism, Topology, etc.

The symposium will be preceeded by a 3-day school (6-8 July) aimed at advanced undergraduate, masters and early PhD students. Travel and accommodation fellowships are available for students wishing to attend the school. For more details see: frontiers.icfo.eu/school-2020/

Venue

ICFO – the Institute of Photonic Sciences, is a young research institution that aims to advance the very limits of the science and technology of light, tackling important challenges faced by society at large in all areas of life, including health, energy, information, safety, security and caring for the environment. ICFO is a member of BIST, the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, and is situated in Castelldefels, a small town located by the sea just outside of Barcelona, Spain.

More information about how to get to ICFO can be found HERE.

Organisation

The Local Organising Committee is Dima Efetov (ICFO), Pablo Jarillo-Herrero (MIT), Frank Koppens (ICFO), Adrian Bachtold (ICFO), Maciej Lewenstein (ICFO), Antoine Reserbat-Plantey (ICFO), Robert Sewell (ICFO).

ICFO Schools on the Frontiers of Light aim at giving talented young researchers and students worldwide a first introduction to a thematic research area and a taste of an international research environment. These schools incorporate a dynamic and social learning environment beyond participating in lectures, including group discussions, direct interactions with the lecturers, student talks, poster presentations, and visits to labs.

Hosted at ICFO – the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona, Spain, and supported by the Fundació Catalunya – La Pedrera • Ignacio Cirac Program Chair, these schools are open to a limited number of students, selected on the basis of academic merit.

ICFO does not tolerate any type of conduct or behavior considered harassment or bullying and has a clear defined policy against harassment.
